On the weekend of June 18/19 the BHI held its annual summer show.

As always the highlight of the weekend was the Big Ben team with their scale working version of the world’s most famous clock, to entertain the visitors, both adults and children.

However, this year another clock stole the limelight, the speaking clock, celebrating its 80th anniversary. Speaking clocks 1 and 2 both being in residence and in working condition in the museum at Upton Hall, were ‘fired up’ for the occasion, with the voices of Ethel Cain and Pat Simmons heard in full voice by those present. There was, in addition, one visitor in particular who showed a special interest, that being Sara Mendes Da Costa, who is the voice of the current speaking clock. Sara was a welcome guest over the weekend and became somewhat of a celebrity.

Other exhibitors included Hadfield Books, Philip Priestly, Antiquarian Horologist and Peter Wharmby Clocks. As always the Clock House Café provided scrumptious refreshments for those who wished to indulge

There was also a photographic competition, the theme this year being, The Passage of Time, which achieved 90 entries and judging proved very difficult with the standard being so high. There were three prizes with the winner receiving £100.00

Next year’s photographic competition will be entitled ‘Time & Motion’. Click here to see details.

For the younger element, the Museum Trust staff strategically placed a number of fluffy mice hidden away around the building for the children present to find. There were no winners or losers, all entrants being presented sweets for their efforts.

The next open day at Upton Hall will be the ‘Fall Back Show’ on Sunday 30th October.
