Duration: 4 Days
Location: Upton Hall

This practical four-day course focuses on the design and manufacture of wheels and pinions—essential components at the heart of every mechanical timepiece. You’ll deepen your understanding of gear mechanics while gaining hands-on experience in producing precision-cut gears to professional horological standards.

Through expert instruction and guided workshop practice, you’ll learn both the theoretical principles of gear trains and the practical processes required to create accurate, reliable components. This course provides the perfect balance of theory and application for those pursuing advanced horological craftsmanship.

What You’ll Learn

Gear Theory & Mechanics
Understand the fundamentals of gear trains, tooth profiles, and the precise technique of depthing a wheel and pinion.

Module Selection
Learn how to select the correct wheel and pinion cutters for accurate gear cutting based on module sizes.

Hands-On Machinery Use
Gain confidence operating key equipment, including dividing heads, wheel cutting engines, lathes, and milling machines.

Exam Preparation
Build practical knowledge to support Exam Units: The Practical Servicing of Clocks (Unit D7), The Practical Servicing of Complex Clocks (Unit D10), and The Practical Restoration and Conservation of Clocks (Unit D13).

Take Home
