Barrie Fitton

19 December 2024

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Barrie Fitton HonMBHI, who was The Horological Journal’s proofreader for more than 17 years and a huge asset to the entire team at the BHI and Upton Hall.

While Barrie’s main passion in life revolved around clocks and their repair, he had a great many other interests, including aeroplanes and vintage cars. Having trained initially as a mechanical engineer, he took up lecturing and for the last fifteen years before retirement joined the teaching staff at the RAF College Cranwell, instructing a variety of Engineering Officer courses.

Barrie passed away peacefully on 11 December 2024 and an obituary will appear in the February edition of the HJ. If anyone would like to add their memories of Barrie to this celebration of his life, please email Helen Milbank at production@bhi.co.uk.

Barrie will be hugely missed by everyone at the BHI and especially his HJ colleagues. Few people will ever match his keen eye for detail and depth of horological knowledge, and we will miss his friendship and chats over a cup of tea in The Clockhouse Cafe at Upton Hall, which was one of his favourite haunts. RIP, Barrie, and thank you.
