Diplomas

vocational qualifications

The BHI offers three vocational qualifications for the UK’s clock and watchmakers. Our awarding body EAL is the UK’s leading industry specialist awarding organisation. EAL is part of Semta – the Science, Engineering, Manufacturing and Technologies Alliance – which is a not-for-profit organisation responsible for engineering skills for the future of the UK’s most advanced sectors. All our qualifications are accredited by the UK’s regulatory qualifications body, Ofqual. They are:

  • Diploma in Clock and Watch Servicing (Level 3)
  • Diploma in the Servicing and Repair of Clocks/Watches (Level 4)
  • Diploma in the Repair, Restoration and Conservation of Clocks/Watches (Level 5)

what the diplomas give you

The Diploma in Clock and Watch Servicing provides you with evidence of employable knowledge and skills which can lead to employment as a technician capable of undertaking basic servicing of clocks and quartz watches.

The Diploma in the Servicing and Repair of Clocks/Watches provides you with evidence of employable knowledge and skills leading to employment as either a skilled clockmaker or watchmaker.  With this qualification you can apply to become a Member of the British Horological Institute (MBHI).

The Diploma in the Repair, Restoration and Conservation of Clocks/Watches provides you with evidence of employable knowledge and skills for employment as a clock or watch conservator or restorer. With this qualification you can apply to become a Fellow of the British Horological Institute (FBHI).


modular qualifications

Each diploma qualification can be gained by candidates entering and passing a series of individual unit examinations.
